About Bill
Some years ago I traded in my career with the Air Force, retired as a colonel, and became a full-fledged bicycle mechanic. It has proved to be the most fun job I've ever had. I've been an avid rider for many years - commuting year-round and going on 100+ mile group and solo rides in the U.S. and abroad - and I've always enjoyed working on bikes: solving mechanical problems, learning new techniques and applying new technologies.
I began my education many years ago with a Penn State economics degree and an MS in chemistry from Yale, both of which left me underprepared for a heavy bike training curriculum. Aside from lots of on-the-job and as-you-go training, I've attended many bike mechanic schools, including:
- the Barnett Bicycle Institute Basic Repair and Overhaul School
- the Barnett Bicycle Institute Suspension Fork Repair School,
- the Advanced Wheel Building School at the United Bicycle Institute, and
- the Sapim Wheel Building School at Antwerp, Belgium.
I'm a Trek-certified mechanic and a licensed USA-Cycling Race Mechanic. I routinely read, study, and then re-study technical material and brochures. Still, I learn something new every day!
Classes
I currently teach two courses in Northern Virginia:
- Wheel Building School - a two session class that covers:
wheel theory; what makes wheels strong, stable and durable; different kinds of spokes; how to lace up a wheel using a standard 3X pattern; how to tension, true, and dish a wheel; how to use a truing stand; best kinds of nipples and nipple wrenches; and more.
- The Park Tool School - an intermediate-level, 8 session class on maintenance for people who want to learn more about their bicycles. This course forms the basis for the "Ready to Roll" video.

Testimonials
"Bill helped me understand the complexity of a bicycle in clear layman's language. I can now make most repairs and maintain my bike like new. It was great adult learning. Thanks, Bill" - Bob J.
"Bill gave me the confidence to work on my bike so that I can repair most common problems such as tuning the derailleur, adjusting brakes, and changing a tire/tube. His class is well organized and has lots of hands-on applications so that we could actually experience the work and satisfaction of fixing something right the first time.? Great class, Bill." - Rose J.
